MODEL CS-126RMV DART DROP APPARATUS

Description
Model CS-126 RMV Dart Drop Impact Tester is an easy-to-use ergonomically designed instrument used to measure the impact resistance of plastic film according to ASTM D1709 and other standards. Standard Scientific has added a microprocessor to control the testing process to ensure test-to-test consistency among operators and to reduce the risk of injury to the operator.

The CS-126 RMV can be supplied with a full range of darts and incremental weights also designed to comply with test standards. The dart is suspended from a pneumatically operated dart release mechanism. The height of the drop can be adjusted to provide a drop height ranging from 25-185 cm (10-72). The capacity of the dart release mechanism exceeds the 2 kg requirements of most test standards.

The sample clamping mechanism is also pneumatically operated for optimal ease of operation and operator safety. It cannot be engaged unless the operator simultaneously presses the two switches mounted on either side of the apparatus.

The base of the machine features sturdy aluminum frame construction with see-through panels to observe specimen behavior under test. The darts are retrieved through the door in the front panel from the foam-lined base plate.

MODEL CS-218 BULK DENSITY APPARATUS

Technical References
ASTM D 1895 Methods A, B & C
ISO R 60

Description
These fixtures are designed to measure the apparent density, bulk factor, and pourability of polymeric materials in the powdered or granular form according to defined specifications in ASTM D 1895. Tests using this equipment provide useful information with regards to their handling in packaging and fabrication. Apparent density is an indication of a material’s fluffiness. Bulk density gives an indication of the expected volume change during fabrication. Pourability indicates how a material handles and is a measure of how well it will flow through processing equipment.

There are 3 models available:
Model CS-218A meets the requirements of ASTM D1895 Method A
Model CS-218B meets the requirements of ASTM D1895 Method B
Model CS-218C meets the requirements of ASTM D1895 Method C

Optional ring stand available.

MODEL CS-170 LANDERS STRESS RUPTURE TESTER

Technical References
ASTM D 5397
ASTM D 2552

Description
The property of environmental stress cracking is a critical performance factor in the areas of wire insulation and both rigid and flexible containers. A specimen is subject to a constant tensile load in the presence of a surface-active agent under controlled temperature. This technique provides a means of determining the environmental stress rupture life of a material as a function of stress and temperature.

The CS-170 as shown above is capable of testing 20 specimens at one time. The tank containing the environment can be lowered to make the mounting of the specimens easier. An immersion heater is used to maintain a constant temperature. The specimens are totally immersed in the environment and a constant tensile load is applied through the use of lever arms

The failure of the specimen causes the lever arm to fall, shutting off an elapsed timer, recording the life of the specimen to the near 0.1 hours. The specimen is a Type S tensile impact specimen.

MODEL CS-172 COMPRESSIVE CREEP TEST FIXTURE

Technical References
ASTM D 2990

Description
The Model CS-172 Creep Test Fixture consists of a stationary frame with a guide tube and a mobile frame attached by a rod to the load. The specimen is placed in a guide tube and the load is applied. The deformation can be measured either from a rigid reference bench or by a dial indicator mounted on the stationary frame. Readings are taken at various times.

Because of its viscoelastic behavior, time-dependent properties, such as creep, are important parameters in characterizing the capabilities of polymeric material. Carefully measured creep data on a given plastic are also necessary and useful for engineering design. Of the different modes of evaluating creep, response to tensile loads is the easiest to simulate and measure. Hence, creep in tension is probably the most popular method. Creep in compression, however, is often important for material evaluation – for example, in judging the effectiveness of inert filler as reinforcement. Also, resistance to creep in compression is important in bearing pads, gaskets, seals, etc., and needs to be determined.

MODEL CS-172C FLEXURAL CREEP TESTER

Technical References
ASTM D 2990

Description
The CS-172C Compressive Creep Apparatus consists of a rigid rack, stirrups, dial indicators, and a loading system conforming to the requirements of Section 6.3 of ASTM D2990. It is essential a 3-point bending test. The test specimen is a rectangular bar. The test rack provides support of the specimen on both ends. A stirrup is placed on the specimen and a weight is attached to the stirrup. The deflection of the specimen is measured at mid-span using a dial indicator. Dial indicators can be supplied for testing in an oven.

Each rack holds 5 specimens. Up to 3 racks can be supplied in one unit.

MODEL CS-191 BIAXIAL ROTATOR

Technical References
ASTM D 3012

Description
Model CS-191 Bi-Axial Rotator provides a means for accelerated aging of propylene plastics. Specimens undergo degradation at a rate that is dependent upon the thermal endurance of the material under examination. The bi-axial rotation technique guarantees that all specimens will be similarly exposed and the effects of temperature gradients in an oven will be minimized. Estimates of life-temperature relationships can be established if the tests are conducted at different temperatures. The CS-191 will rotate around its horizontal and vertical axis at 1 rpm. It will accommodate (40) forty, 2 x 0.5-inch specimens.

Specifications
Drum size of 8 inch OD x 7.5 inches with 5 clips per row. The temperature cabinet for the above rotator must have a 1.75-inch clearance hole in the top and must have a minimum inside dimension of 14 x 14 x 14 inches.

MODEL CS-205 SHRINK TENSION HOLDER

Technical References
ASTM D 2838

Description
Shrink tension is the force (psi or n) that is exerted on a package by the film as it is shrunk. Depending on the application, a film with high or low shrink tension may be desirable. For example, in over-wrapping thin, flexible items such as magazines or greeting cards, a film with high shrink tension values would be undesirable since the product may be distorted when the film is shrunk. Because of the influence of the orientation, shrink tension values for both the longitudinal and transverse directions are provided.

The CS-205 is depicted in the sketch above (the handle of the fixture is not shown). It is a strain-gauged fixture design according to the requirements of ASTM D 2838.

A chart recorder can collect the electronic output or a PC-based data acquisition system. A PC-based data acquisition system that includes the PC, strain gauge conditioner and software is an available option.

Other accessories include a cutting die for specimen preparation and a cutting die and a constant temperature liquid bath with digital temperature control to an accuracy of +/- 0.5oC.
